Sir Charles Chaplin

Life story

Charles was born into abject poverty in London and grew up with his older half-brother Sidney in the streets and homes of London. Even as a child, he earned his living performing in music halls. His artistic talents soon became apparent. He became the first world-famous film star during the silent film era in the tragic-comic role of the Tramp. He was a co-founder of the film company United Artists. As a multi-talented actor, he made the leap from black and white silent films to color talkies and became famous for his many films. In terms of relationships, things did not go so well. He was married four times, three times to very young women. He had a total of 11 children. He was knighted in 1975. He died in 1977 in Vevey, Switzerland.

His approach to his history

Charles said about life: „Simplicity is hard to achieve. Life can be wonderful if you’re not afraid of it. All it takes is courage, imagination … and a little money. Imagination means nothing without action.“ Of his philosophical worldview, he said: „I am convinced that faith is the precursor of all our ideas … to deny faith is to disprove oneself and the spirit that generates all our creative powers.“ As an author and actor, he has dealt with his childhood in an impressive way, e.g. in the movie „The Kid“. He overcame the tragic events (his father was an alcoholic and died far too early, his mother was mentally ill) with humor. That’s why his first comedies always have a melancholy quality.

Steve Jobs

Life story

Steve was given up for adoption by his parents at birth in 1955. He grew up with Paul and Clara Jobs in San Francisco together with a younger adopted sister, Patty, in Silicon Valley. He was fascinated by electronics from an early age. He dropped out of university in 1973 and worked for the electronics company Atari. In 1976, he founded Apple together with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. In 1984, they presented the first „Macintosh“ computer. In the following years, Apple became the market leader in the computer industry with its own production philosophy and made Jobs a billionaire. In 1991 he married Laurene Powell. Jobs has four children. Three with Laurene, plus his first (illegitimate) daughter Lisa, whom he only acknowledged very late in life. Steve died of cancer in 2011, leaving behind a computer empire.

His approach to his history

Although he found out about his adoption at an early age – which was a shock for him – he did not feel abandoned. His adoptive parents were able to give him a sense of home and family. He always thought he was special. And Paul and Clara Jobs had given him this feeling. He later found his biological father thanks to a tip from his half-sister Mona and visited the café where Abdullfatah worked. He did not identify himself and was not very enthusiastic about these anonymous encounters. As a businessman, Steve was obsessed with perfection and control. For many of his companions, he was a difficult contemporary who was not characterized by empathy. He tried to fill his inner emptiness through Buddhism.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Life story

Although Leonardo was recognized as an illegitimate child by his prominent father, he spent his early years growing up in his grandfather’s house. He spent his early years in Florence, where his artistic talent was also recognized. He began his first apprenticeship in 1469 with the then famous sculptor Verrocchio. In 1476, an anonymous complaint of homosexual acts was filed against him. However, there was never any evidence or a verdict. From 1482, he lived and worked in Milan. There he became famous for his many inventions of all kinds. He painted pictures, but also designed machines, flying machines and weapons, and carried out medical studies that were far ahead of his time. Many of his works of art are still world-famous today. He died unmarried and without children in 1519.

His approach to his history

As a „bastard“ (illegitimate child), Leonardo had a difficult time. He felt rejected and abandoned by his parents. His only really warm family relationship was with his uncle Francesco. He seems to have filled this void with exuberant creativity, curiosity and imagination. On his deathbed, Leonardo is reported to have felt deep remorse for his unbelief and had a conversion experience. Although he created profound works of art for the church that testify to a deep spirituality, he was always sceptical of organized religion. The church also repeatedly accused him of practicing magic – which he, as a scientific thinker, deeply rejected.

Marilyn Monroe

Life story

Marilyn grew up 12 days after her birth and spent the first few years in the care of the religious Bolender couple as a foster child. In 1934, she became a social orphan and gained an enthusiasm for film through the care of Grace Mc Kee.After another stay in an orphanage, she experienced sexual abuse in her mother’s home. She spent some good years with Ana Lower, a widow and relative. At the age of sixteen, she married to get away from the orphanage.A photographer discovered her as an attractive worker in a munitions factory. In order to get a film contract, she divorced in 1946. Her meteoric rise to film and sex symbol began in 1949. She was married three times. She died in 1962 at the age of 36, presumably from a drug overdose.

Her approach to her history

For many years, she spread the rumor that she was the illegitimate daughter of actor Clark Gable. The countless changes of caregivers, especially due to her mentally ill mother, made Marilyn feel homeless inside. She was terrified of mental illness, as was the case in her family. That is why she attended psychiatric counseling for many years.Although she was one of the most sought-after women of her time – and was marketed as such – inside she remained the lonely little insecure child who longed for real love. She swallowed countless medications. If her mentally ill mother had given her permission to be adopted by the Bolenders, Marilyn might have been spared a lot.

Jesus Christ

Life story

Jesus – Hebrew: Yeshua – was born in the year 0 or -4 depending on the calendar (this is where the Christian calendar begins) in Beth-Lehem in modern-day Israel. His parents fled with him to Egypt when the then King Herod learned that the Messiah (Redeemer) of Israel had been born and consequently had all male children murdered. After the tyrant’s death, Yeshua returned with his family and lived in Nazareth. He grew up with at least five halfsiblings. He developed extraordinary abilities at a very early age and claimed to be the Son of God.He learned the carpentry trade of his stepfather Joseph and began his public ministry at the age of around 30.He attracted thousands of people with his special talent for performing miracles and healings. He spoke of God like no other. For about 3 years, he traveled the country with 12 disciples and women, teaching people God’s ways. The jealous elite had him crucified with falsified and fabricated accusations. Through his resurrection on the third day and the words he had spoken, Christianity was born.

His approach to his history

Jesus grew up with his stepfather Joseph and his mother Mary.At the age of twelve at the latest, he made a statement about his real father: God, the heavenly Father. His life was characterized by the tension between having a human family and at the same time being completely obedient to the heavenly Father. This repeatedly led to conflicts, which we also read about in the Gospels. His brothers and sisters rejected Jesus‘ claims. In Nazareth and elsewhere, mocking comments about his illegitimate origins circulated time and again. This is probably why Nazareth only witnessed a small number of the miracles and healings. His intimate relationship with the heavenly Father helped him to overcome all this.Jesus had a special passion for the welfare and hearts of children, the weak, the outcast and the despised. For this reason, Christians to this day are also committed to the lives of the unborn and the disabled. After Easter, his half-siblings also confessed him as the Son of God and Savior. Jesus offered all the homeless, orphans and illegitimate children a new family, of which he, Jesus, is the head.
